About Us

Our Mission

It is our mission to be the leader in providing the highest quality healthcare, recovery care, and diagnostic imaging services in an environment that is safe, convenient, and comfortable for our patients, their families, our employees, and the healthcare practitioners who use our facilities. By setting high standards for ourselves, we hope to improve and set the standard for quality healthcare for all regional residents. Physicians who choose to use our facilities can trust their patients will receive the best possible care. Our patients can feel confident that skilled and sincere professionals are caring for them. We strive to provide genuine care and comfort, and fulfill even the unexpressed wishes and needs of both patients and physicians. In short, our patients are guests and physicians are our customers.

Black Hills Surgical Hospital is not a facility for just the wealthy and insured patient, but for those with no insurance and little or no ability to pay their bill. In that way, we meet one of our fundamental missions—improving the health and well being of all regional residents

Our History

Black Hills Surgical Hospital first opened its doors in January of 1997 with only two operating rooms, four overnight suites and 35 employees. Today, we offer a wide range of surgical procedures and have grown to include eleven operating rooms, private step-down areas, 26 private recovery suites, a state-of-the-art imaging center and pain clinic, and nearly 400 highly skilled employees.

As Rapid City grew into the region’s medical hub, the need for a specialized hospital that focused on providing quality patient care and service became evident to many local healthcare providers. They began working together to devise a completely different hospital experience than residents were accustomed to. They looked at all industries and asked: “Who is doing the best job in customer service?” Clearly it was the hospitality industry. As a result, management took lessons from the Ritz-Carlton School of Hospitality and implemented the highest customer service standards to complement their vision of providing patients with excellent care. The result was a warm, inviting, quality-driven hospital that operates under a complete customer service and hospitality model.

Ensuring Quality Clinical Care

To ensure quality care, we constantly review and update our policies, protocols and procedures as this helps us to meet not only our own high standards, but also the nation’s latest guidelines and standards. We have also instituted various features to aide our staff in providing quality, safe and accurate care. These include an efficient scheduling system, a high nurse to patient ratio of 1:3, in-house hospitalists, suggestion boxes for employees and guests, policy review committees and a non-punitive policy to encourage the reporting of errors.

Research has shown clinical quality is directly correlated to the volume and frequency of procedures performed. Basically, the more generalized you are, the more difficult it is to excel at any given specialty. By definition, a specialty hospital “specializes” in select areas unlike a general hospital is able to do. Black Hills Surgical Hospital is proud to offer a team of highly skilled nurses and technologists who specialize in a select variety of surgeries because we believe by specializing in specific procedures, we’re allowing our team to do and be the best in their field. Surgeries conducted at our center include orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, general surgery, gynecology, podiatry, urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, dental/oral surgery and bariatric/weight loss surgery.

Physician Owned Hospital Disclosure

Black Hills Surgical Hospital is partially owned by physicians and meets the Federal definition of a “physician-owned hospital.”  A list of physician-owners is available by clicking here or upon request. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Like many hospitals in South Dakota, Black Hills Surgical Hospital does not have a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy on site 24 hours per day, seven days per week.  During weekday operations, physicians are ordinarily on site from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM each day.  In addition, an Emergency Response Team consisting of a Doctor of Internal Medicine, Anesthesiologist, and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) are on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week.  If you develop an emergency condition when a doctor of medicine or osteopathy is not present, a Registered Nurse certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) will assess your condition and begin initial treatment until the Emergency Response Team arrives.
